This study is intended to discuss theories and research finding that related to the use of role play to improve students' speaking. Speaking is the process of building sharing meaning trough the use of verbal and non-verbal symbols, in a variety of contexts (Chaney, 1998). The method used in this study was library research. The data were taken from books related to the material covered. In collecting data, the authors employed several ways: first. the authors identified the material to be covered. Second, the writer looked for relevant information comes from reading the books, articles, journals, and other reading sources. Third, the result of the exploration of the various reading is then elaborated and discussed to find out the solution to the problems earlier stated in the background of this study. Finally, the writer made a conclusion and summary of relevant data to the subject matter in the form of quotations. The study found that using Role Play makes the class more interesting and makes the students be critical and creative; it also makes students more motivated in learning and more able to understand the lesson. It is suggested by Spratt (1991) that it is better for English teachers to use role play technique on their teaching learning process since this technique has significant benefit for the students. Role play is very useful to use to improve students' speaking skill (Brown, 2004). In short, teaching speaking by using role play gives positive effect in teaching learning process; it is effective to enhance the students' speaking skill. This study is expected to be useful for other English teachers.
