Reading is one of the four skills that have to be mastered by students at senior high school students. In this level, the aim of teaching reading is to make students understand the book written in English, but the outcome of teaching reading comprehension is still unsatisfactory yet, it caused by the students have lack of vocabulary and teaching learning activity still conducted in monotonous way. Forthermore to overcome the problem above the writer suggest the teacher to use cooperative learning STAD in teaching learning process. The objective of this study
is to look at some given theories and/or research findings on the use of cooperative learning for teaching reading skill. The discussion of the approach is focused on a
particular model under the cooperative learning, namely Student Team Achievement Division (ST AD). The study found that using ST AD can make the student more active in class and they can build a social relationship between the students. The method used in this study is library research. Based on the research findings and experts' statements, it is found that cooperative learning is effective to increase the students' reading skill. This study is expected to be useful for other English teachers.
