Reading becomes one of the important skills in teaching English subject. Based on Unit Level Based Curriculum (KTSP) 2006, the standard competence in teaching reading for second grade students of junior high school in semester two is they are able to comprehend short essay in the form of recount and narrative text. One of three basic competences in reading is students' comprehension on rhetorical steps that relate to recount text and narrative text. Pertaining to this matter, the writer conducted a research under the title "Students' Achievement in Understanding Rhetorical Steps of Recount Text and Narrative Text". This research is intended to know how the students' achievement on second grade of SMP Negeri 3 Ingin Jaya in understanding rhetorical steps that related to recount text and narrative text. The kind of this research is descriptive quantitative research. The population of this research was all second grade students of SMP Negeri 3 Ingin Jaya, while the sample of this research is students of Class II-5; the number of the samples is 29 students. Data collection was gathered by using test. The type of test is multiple choices question. The result of test is analyzed by using the range score (R), the interval (i), the amount of class interval (K), and the mean score (X). The result of test shows that the highest score is 75 and the lowest score is 25; the range score (R) is 50; the interval (i) is 6; the amount of class interval (K) is 9; and the mean score (X) is 42,24. It can be concluded that the mean score of students' achievement in understanding rhetorical steps in recount text and narrative text is still poor below the minimum passing score (KKM) that has been determined of the school. In terms of this, the minimum passing score is 65.
