This research under the title "The Application of Contextual Teaching and learning in Teaching Reading Comprehension". It is experimental research with the objectives being to find out whether or not there was a significant difference in reading comprehension achievement of the students who were taught by using Contextual Teaching and Learning method and those who were taught by using traditional method. This research was conducted at SMA Negeri 4 Banda Aceh with the subject being the second grade students that consist of 60 participants. To carry out the effectiveness of research, the writer took two classes where XI-lA 1 is an experimental group and XI-IA3 a control group. It was taken by using judgmental sampling technique. During the study, the writer used CTL based on Learning Community to teach experimental group and Grammar Translation Method for control group. The instrument of this study was the test; that is, pre-test and post-test. The pre-test was given before the treatments to know the students' achievement and post-test was given to know the students' achievement after the treatments. Before the test was given, the reliability and validity were checked. The resuJt of the study in experimental and control groups were analyzed by using paired sample test and to find out the differences between experimental and control groups, the writer uses independent sample test through the Statistic Product and Service Solution (SPSS). Based on independent sample test, it was found out that the value of t-obtained was
5.007 and the t-table value was 2.00. The significant level was 0.05 two tailed test and the degree of freedom was 58, where the total number of sample (60). Since the t- obtained was higher than t-table (5.007>2.00), the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. It means that there was a significant difference between the experimental group and control group after the treatment was given. Based on the result of the study, it can conclude that teaching reading comprehension by using CTL based on learning community can improve students' achievement in reading comprehension. Therefore, it is recommended that the teachers should apply CTL in teaching reading especially in reading comprehension.
