Title : The Correlation between Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary
Mastery
The problem formulation of this study that if there is any significant correlation between the students' reading comprehension and their vocabulary mastery. The objective study is to find out if there is a significant correlation between the students' reading comprehension and their vocabulary mastery. It is focused on the correlation between reading comprehension and vocabulary to the second year students of SMPN 18 Banda Aceh. The reading comprehension focused on descriptive text for the Junior High School. The vocabulary mastery focused on vocabulary for the Junior High School level such as noun, verbs, adjective and adverbs. The method used was descriptive quantitative research. The population was the second year students of SMPN 18 Banda Aceh. The sample was 40 students of class VIII-2 by using random sampling. The data was reading comprehension test and vocabulary mastery test. Based on the calculation, the sum of reading comprehension test score (∑X) and vocabulary mastery test score (∑Y) were high (2425 and 2555). The result of data analysis shows that the correlation coefficient between the two variables is 0,22 (rxy). It means that Ha is rejected and Ho is accepted. In conclusion, there is no significant correlation between students' reading comprehension and their vocabulary mastery at the second year students of SMPN 18 Banda Aceh.
