Title : Students' Achievement in Reading Comprehension at Junior High Schools in
Banda Aceh

This study aimed at revealing the difficulties faced by English students in understanding reading comprehension and to know whether mastering reading aspect can or cannot help students' achievement in understanding reading comprehension text in four Junior High Schools in Banda Aceh (SMP Negeri 6, SMP Muhammadiyah, SMP Negeri 9, and MTsN Rukoh). This study employs a case study design followed by the use of descriptive quantitative method. The samples of this study were those four schools' students and the population is the 2nd grade students. The data in this study were collected from May 6th to May 19th, 20 II. The instruments used are test and questionnaire. The test consists of 3 text passages and each passage follows by
10 multiple choice questions and the questionnaire consists of 10 multiple choice questions. The data of the test were analyzed to find out the level of difficulty of reading aspects (main idea, vocabulary, detail, and inference). The research result shows that there are some difficulties faced by students in all aspects of reading. It is proved by the level of difficulty charts of each aspect. Firstly, in vocabulary aspect, SMPN 6: 14%, SMP Muhammadiyah: 28%, SMPN 9: 43%, and MTsN Rukoh : 71%. Second, from main idea, SMPN 6: 20%, SMP Muhamrnadiyah: 40%, SMPN 9: 60%, and MTsN Rukoh: 8o%. Third, in detail aspect, SMPN 6: II %, SMP Muhamrnadiyah: 22%, SMPN 9: 33%, and MTsN Rukoh : 44%. Then in the skill of inference: SMPN 6: 11%, SMP Muhammadiyah: 22%, SMPN 9: 33%, and MTsN Rukoh : 55%. MTsN Rukoh students face the most problem in reading text. Their difficulty percentage of reading comprehension is the highest that another schools. Also, it is proved based on the most questionnaire questions, e.g. 71.42% of students consider that reading text 2 and 3 are difficult (question no. 8 and 9). Otherwise, students of SMPN 6 score high than another schools' students. It means that their problem in understanding reading comprehension is the lowest, by questionnaire questions, only 14% of student consider the reading text 2 and 3 are difficult, while another 73.52% of them consider the texts were quite easy. From the questionnaire, the most difficulties faced by students, it is hard for them to understand the vocabulary (question no. 9) and while the vocabulary is the most important thing in reading, because of that most of the result tests are quite low.
