: Learning Strategies Used By Junior High School Students in
Learning Reading at SMPN 1 Baitussalam


The aim of this study is to identify the learning strategies used by students to understand the main idea of narrative text in learning reading. This script was conducted to generate the questions whether learning strategies and which dominant types of strategies are used by students in learning reading and which type of do the students most and least. The method used is descriptive qualitative method and the data would be analyzed by using technique of descriptive percentage. The research was implemented at SMPN 1 Baitussalam which chose the sample based on purposive sampling technique because there are a little of students. So the writer wants to focus on the 2nd grade with 39 students. To gain the data needed. the writer distributed the questionnaire taken based on O'Malley theories which are definition of the type of strategies written in Bahasa Indonesia. The questionnaire contains 15 items. The writer did observation in a reading class and documentation but it was not to get data. The result from the questionnaire revealed some evidences of learning strategies used by the students at SMPN 1 Baitussaiam, which were: (1) the learning strategies used in learning reading are combination strategies, (2) the dominant types of strategies used by students in learning reading in narrative text are question for clarification, self management, resourcing, translation, note taking, cooperation and inference and (3) the most and the least of strategy used by students is question clarification and key word.
