The purpose of this study is to find out what reading strategies and dominant strategies are used by the second year students in comprehending narrative texts. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative analysis. Moreover, the instruments used in this study were questionnaires and interview. Based on the collected data, it is found that the students always use resourcing strategy in comprehending narrative text. In addition. they often use deduction. note taking, cooperation, and translation. They seldom use advance organizer, inferencing, elaboration, and summarizing in comprehending narrative text. In addition, the dominant strategies used by the second year students at SMPN 12 Banda Aceh include resourcing, deduction, note taking, and translation. Therefore, the researcher suggests teachers to help students enrich their reading strategies in order to choose strategies which facilitate them to succeed in comprehending text.
