This thesis is titled Increasing Reading Skill through Skimming. The aim of this study was to find out whether using skimming can increases students' reading skill, especially in identifying the main idea of the text. The methodology that used in this study was classroom action research. The population of this study was the first year students of SMP Negeri 3 Banda Aceh and the sample of this study was 12 students. The data was collected on two different time; the first time it was collected on May 20,22, and 24, 2008. and the second time was on May 26, 28, and 30,
2008.They were conducting the classroom action researcher and given a set of the test in the form of multiple choices for reading skill achievement, and the number of the questions test was 15. For Skimming achievement the students were required to find the main idea by writing the out line of the text. To analyze the result of the researching, the writer presented in two parts, they are analysis of the teaching and learning process, and analysis of the students' learning result. The result of the test showed that the students can increase their reading by using skimming method. Furthermore, using skimming method was better strategy in finding the main idea of the reading text for the first students at SMP Negeri 3 Banda Aceh.
