The objective of this study is to know the students' ability in reading narrative text by using oral retelling in understanding main idea. sequence of events, character, setting and plot The method applied in this study was a descriptive qualitative method. The students were asked to retell one of two narrative texts. Each narrative texts should have five performance elements, they are; main idea, sequence of events, character, setting, and plot. Each point was worth 4 points, with a total possible score of 20 points. The result showed that the students' were quite difficult in understanding main idea and sequence of events. These problems happened since most of the students still had difficulties in finding appropriate vocabularies in order to express their ideas. In addition, it is hard for the students to understand word meaning of the text. it is hoped this study can provide data for teachers which can be used in the preparation of effective teaching material.
