This research is about "The Use of Cognitive Strategy in Reading Comprehension of Second Year Students at SMAN I Dewantara". The aim of this study was to find out whether understanding vocabulary and analyzing expression used by the students as a strategy in reading comprehension and to find out whether these strategies affect their performance in reading comprehension. The methodology that was used in this study was descriptive quantitative. The population of this study was the second year students of SMAN I Dewantara and the sample was 40 students. The data was collected on September 7", 2007. The students were given test and questionnaire. In the test, the data was analyzed by using the Product Moment Pearson correlation and t test formula. The correlation was done into two steps. The first result was 0,611 means that both word meaning and reading comprehension have high correlation which had t score was 4,76. The second result was 0,483 means that both word part and reading comprehension have enough correlation which had t score was 3,36.It means there was a statistically significant correlation between one variable and the other. Furthermore, Questionnaire was analyzed by using Percentage formula. The result showed that cognitive strategies such understanding-word• meaning strategy and recognizing-word-part strategy were ever used by teacher of SMAN I Dewantara when teaching reading and one of the better ways for students in comprehending a reading text. From this research, other researchers who may concern with similar study are suggested to conduct further research by using another cognitive strategies and using more samples to represents the data in order to have an accurate and better resu It.
