Title : A Comparative Study of Using Numbered Heads Together
(NHT) and Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) in
Teaching Reading Comprehension

This thesis is under the title of "A Comparative Study of Using Numbered Heads Together (NHT) and Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD) in Teaching Reading Comprehension. NHT and STAD are the two techniques in Cooperative Learning method which can help the students to work cooperatively in doing the learning activities in groups. In this study, the writer is challenged to compare which one of the two techniques can give more contribution to students' achievement in reading comprehension. The writer took of two classes of the second grade to be an NHT treatment class which consisting of 20 students and a STAD treatment class which consisting of 27 students. The writer ad.ministered 20 pre-test questions to both groups dealing with main idea, factual, vocabulary, and inferential questions. Then, in teaching reading comprehension, the writer taught the both classes by giving four sessions of treatments related to the application of Numbered Heads Together (NHT) and Student teams Achievement Division (STAD). At the end of the experiment, the writer gave post-test to both groups. Based on the research done the writer found that teaching reading comprehension by using STAD gave better result than that ofNHT. According to statistical analysis of the NHT and SIAD classes by using SPSS computer program, it is found that the mean of pretest scores both of NHT and STAD classes respectively are 31.5 and 39.44 while the mean of posttest score of both classes increase respectively to be 55.5 and 66.85. Toe SPSS program also analyzes the value oft-test that is -0.926 while the critical value oft-table at the significance level of 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) of 45 is 0.359. It is concluded that because the obtained t-test score is lower than t-table value (- 0.926
