<note>The title of this study is "Teaching Modal Auxiliary Verbs through Dialogs. It is an experimental study done for three weeks at SMP Negeri 18 Banda Aceh. The aims of this study are (l) to know whether the students of SMP Negeri 18 Banda Aceh can get better in studying modal auxiliary verbs by using dialogs, and (2) to find out if the dialogs can motivate students in studying modal auxiliary verbs. Some modals used in this research are will, would, can, could, may, might, shall, should, and must. The population of this study was the students from the second grade of SMP Negeri 18 Banda Aceh in academic year 2008-2009. There were two groups in this study, an experimental group (EG) and control group (CG). The sample of this study is 46 students; 23 students at EG and 23 students at CG. The data were collected through. the pre-test and post test that were given to the students before and after conducting this study. The data were analyzed by the t-test formula. For supporting the data this study used an observation sheet, to see how the students with the implementation of the dialogs. According to the data analysis showed that the calculated value oft-test of post test (after the experiment) is 5. The critical value of t-table at the level significant 0,05 is 2,2 and at the level of significant 0,01 is 2,69 with the degree of freedom 45. Since, the result of t-table is greater than t-table, the hypothesis is accepted. It means that the application of dialogs in this study can increase the students' ability in mastering modal auxiliary verbs. Based on the data from the observation, it showed that the students were motivated to the dialogs. The students became more active and creative in learning modal auxiliary verbs with the dialogs.
