<note>Speaking is one of the four language skills that must be taught to junior high school students as a part of English language teaching. However, the students find it difficult to speak English because the students are not confident on speaking, they do not have ideas in their mind, they have very limited vocabulary, they do not enough time to practice speaking, and they do not find that English is good for their daily life. Supported by some theories, applying cooperative learning STAD can increase students' ability in speaking English. This model can set and increase the students' self confidence, interests, and self esteem. The purpose of this study is to explore some theories concerning cooperative learning STAD which can be applied in junior high schools. In literature review, the data were collected from various sources and used as the materials in this teaching speaking study. The main sources of this study were gathered from library study by looking for relevant materials in the form of books, articles, and journals. The writer also accessed reference materials from internet. This study is expected to give a feedback for English teachers who teach English at junior high schools.
