<note>This study is aimed at finding out whether teaching speaking through role play technique can increase students' ability in speaking of junior high school students. The writer hypothesized that using role play technique will increase students? ability in speaking (Ha). The population of this study is the second year students of SMP Negeri 9 Banda Aceh. There are three classes for the second year namely 21,2, and 22. As the sample, the researcher chose two classes, 21 and 22. The 21 was chosen as the control group and the 22 was the experimental group. The total number of the sample was 60 students. The instrument used for pre test and post test was oral test, which consist of ten questions about; what is their name, born, hobby, live. etch. There were seven meetings in this study. Here, some formulas that are suggested by Arikunto (2006) were used to analyze the data. The result of the test from the experimental group showed that the students' ability in mastering speaking increased after the use of role play technique. This was proven by the t- score result. The t-score was 4,920, referred lo the t-table at level significance 0,05% with the degree of freedom (di) 58 the result was higher than the t-table, so the alternative hypothesis that stating speaking role play technique can encourage students to speak better English and to increase speaking aspects is accepted.
