The research on learning strategies is still difficult to find in NAO (Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam) province. There are only few researchers attempted to study this field in Indonesia. Therefore, this research aimed at investigating and identifying learning strategies used by SMU students in learning English in Banda Aceh.
The data collected in this study were obtained by distributing questionnaires. Questionnaires contained of SILL (Strategy inventory for learning) adapted from Oxford were administered to 100 sample students. The current research was carried out involving a sample of 33 students at SMA Negeri 4 Banda Aceh, 23 students at SMA Negeri 5 Banda Aceh, 23 students at SMA Negeri 8 Banda Aceh, 13 students at SMK Negeri 1 Banda Aceh, and 8 students at SMK Negeri 3 Banda Aceh.
This research revealed some evidences of learning strategies used by senior high school students in Banda Aceh. First, the current research presented that the senior high school students in Banda Aceh were metacognitive learning strategies user. These strategies were of the most preferences which have mean 3.33. Second, it was revealed that the senior high school students in Banda Aceh dominantly used ten learning strategies in learning English. Third, the finding showed that the students appear to be lack of cooperating with English teacher and classmates about English learning. They were not familiar with paying attention to their own feeling and social relationship. It seemed that they had not yet informed to use internet properly to increase their English skill. Most of student used intemets for fun, game and other business that had not related to the language learning. Finally, the data were transformed and computed into paired sample T-test to find out the significant differences in using the learning strategies according to the gender, the• students' English proficiency, and the language use at home. It was reported that male group are regarded to have the highest use of metacognitive strategies and female were presented to have the highest used of compensation and affective strategies. In the term of English proficiency, the successful students are the highest user of teaming strategies. While in the term of language use at home, the student who use Indonesian language at home were prefer to use affective learning strategies as second choice. However, It was found that there were no differences in using learning strategies concerning to gender, English proficiency, and the language use at home.
