 <note>The  title of this  research  is  &quot;The  correlation  between  Simple  Past Tense and Short  Reading  Passage&quot;.  The  aims  of this  study  were  to  know  whether  there  is  a correlation  between  short  reading  passage  and  simple  past tense.  The  sample  of this study  was  students  of Class  11-1  of SMPN  2  Banda  Aceh  who  studied  the  English subject on the day the research was done. The sample  was 30 students  in  the academic year of 2009/20 I 0.  The method used in this study was descriptive quantitative  research. The instrument used was test. The test consisted of four types:  multiple choice, fill in the blanks, comprehension,  and true /false test. There were two short reading texts provided in the test. Two type of the texts consisted of nineteen items for fill in the blanks test and ten  items  for comprehension  test.  In multiple  choice and true/false  test consisted of ten items.  The  data  of the  test  was  analyzed  by  using  the  fonnula  of product  moment correlation.  The  result shows that the students who  failed to pass the test of student's mastery in past tense were also  poor in  mastery short reading passages. Therefore,  from to the data analysis  it  shows  that there was  a significance  correlation  between simple past tense and short  reading  passages.  It means that the application of a short reading passages   in  this   research   can   help   the   students   in   mastering   simple   past  tense. Furthennore,  using short  reading  passages  was a good technique  to improve students' achievement  in mastering simple past tense.&#13;
