Title : The lmpact ofUsing Grammar Translation Method
                   in Teaching Speaking Class

Grammar Translation Method emphasized on mastery knowledge about language and grammar and did not aim at mastering productive skills. This method is not suitable for teaching speaking because it can make students bored during the teaching learning process. The writer conducted this study with the aim at knowing whether Grammar Translation Method gives any impacts on student achievement and the teaching learning process. To gain the data for this study, the writer conducted a descriptive qualitative study at SMP Negeri I6 Banda Aceh. The second grade students of SMP Negeri 16 Banda Aceh were taken as the subject of this study. Tbe writer took one class purposively from three classes and took twenty seven
students as the sample of this study. The instruments used in this research were test, observation, documentary analysis, and questionnaire. The result of this study is
using Grammar Translation Method did not give positive impacts on student speaking performance and teaching learning process. It can be seen that only 3 students (1 1.11%) passed the Minimal Criteria of Leaming Mastery (KKM) in the school and most of them (88.89%) failed and from the result of the observation the students did not like Grammar Translation Method which is used by the teacher. It is proved by they did not like focus on grammar, but they like work in group or use media.
