Title : Code-Switching as Teachers’ Teaching Strategy in Classroom for Low English Proficiency Learners (A Qualitative Study at Junior Islamic Boarding School of Darul Ihsan, Aceh Besar)

This qualitative study aims to find out the function of teachers’ code-switching to support low proficiency learners in learning English and to determine the benefits of code-switching done by the teachers in the teaching and learning English. The data of this study was obtained from two English teachers at Junior Islamic Boarding School of Darul Ihsan, Aceh Besar In collecting the data, the observation sheet and questionnaires were used as the instruments. Two English classes were observed in two sessions respectively. All the conversation in the classes was recorded and the code-switching employed by the teachers and students then transcribed and analyzed using the pattern proposed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). The result proved that the teachers at Junior Islamic Boarding School of Darul Ihsan used code-switching for clarifying something, explaining difficult terms in grammar, building solidarity between teacher and students, quoting the specific term which is available in English, adding specification, repeating a message which has been said in English before, explaining message qualification and emphasizing a particular issue. Then, the result of the questionnaires showed that the students find some benefits of using code-switching such as enjoying communication during learning activities, feeling satisfied and comfortable in the learning situation, feeling less tense and not rigid, feeling not lost concentration and focusing to the lesson. Moreover, the students also claimed that using code-switching improved their ability to understand new words, helped them to understand the difficult concept and English grammar.
