Title : The Application of Jigsaw and Numbered Heads Together in
Understanding Reading Text

Cooperative learning is a learning model that prioritizes cooperation among students in groups to achieve learning objectives. Cooperative learning model has several techniques, including Jigsaw technique and Numbered Heads Together technique. By applying these both techniques, it is expected that students' learning outcomes in understanding reading text will be improved. Therefore, the researcher is interested to conduct a research under the title "The Application of Jigsaw and Numbered Heads Together in Understanding Reading Text." This study is intended to know whether the application of Jigsaw technique and NHT technique can improve students' understanding in reading text. Moreover, it also aims to know whether the use of Jigsaw technique is better than NHT technique to improve students' understanding in reading text. The kind of this research is quantitative research with experimental approaches and pre-experimental design type of pre-test and Post-test Group. The population in this study was all second year students of SMP Negeri 4 Banda Aceh, while the sample was taken two classes with purposive sampling; class Vill-1 was taught by using Jigsaw technique and class VIII-2 was taught by using Numbered Heads Together. The mean scores of students who are taught by using Jigsaw technique is 77.8, while the mean scores of students who are taught by using NHT technique is 60.8. The mean score of Jigsaw class is going above the minimum passing score; in this case the minimum passing score is 65. Data collection was obtained by using tests. Quantitative data processing is done by using right-side t-test significance level a = 0.05 and degree of freedom df = 54, by first testing the homogeneity test, obtained from the calculation of the two classes are homogeneous so that the test- t can be done. In the t-test, it is obtained that 'so+, is higher than 'ta, 4.36 >2.01. It shows that H, is accepted, so it can be concluded the applicationof Jigsaw can improve students' understanding in reading text and the Jigsaw technique is better than NHT technique to improve students' understanding in reading text.
