Title : The Investigation of Communication Strategies Used by English Department Lecturers at STKIP Bina Bangsa Getsempena Banda Aceh)

This study aimed at finding out the types of classroom communication strategies employed by English department lecturers during their teaching time. This study is a qualitative study. There were three lecturers involved in this study. They were teaching English for Academic Purpose, Critical Speaking, and Advanced Reading. The instruments of this study were videotape of the classes, observation guide, field notes, and interview guide. After the data collection proceed, the data were analyzed using coding analysis and interactive analysis. The results show that the most employed direct strategies were circumlocution and code-switching. HQ used circumlocution for 54 times and code-switching for 51 times; and RR used circumlocution for 21 times and code-switching for 32 times. For indirect strategies, the majority used was comprehension check which was used 47 times by RR, 28 times by HQ, and 9 times by SW. Last, for te interactional strategy, using fillers was the most used strategy. RR used it for 19 times, HQ used it for 46 times, and SW used it for 26 times. It is suggested that lecturers/teachers try to balance the use of these three strategies in order to maintain good teacher-student communication. However, for adult learners (college students), lecturers mostly use circumlocution during the lecture.
