Title : Investigating Strategies Used by English Teachers in Teaching Speaking (A Case Study in SMP Negeri 1 Kota Sabang)
Keywords: Strategies, Teaching Speaking

A successful teacher is largely determined by the strategies he/she uses in the learning process. This research was conducted to find out the strategies used, problems and the solutions faced by the teachers during the teaching learning process at SMP Negeri 1 Kota Sabang, and the students’ responses toward the teachers’ strategies. This research is descriptive in nature by using a case research method. The subject of this research were 3 English teachers and 60 students of SMP N 1 Kota Sabang. The subjects were chosen through purposive sampling. The data of this research were collected through three processes; observation, interview, and questionnaire distributions. So, the researcher employed forms of questionnaire, observation and interview guide sheet. The data taken from observation and interview were then analyzed by using the theory of Miles, Huberman & Saldana (2014) while the questionnaire was counted by using Likert’s scale. The problems faced by the teachers during the teaching-learning process in the class are classified in to two categories, the linguistics and non- linguistics conclusions. In the linguistics terms, this research showed that students’ vocabulary was needed to be improved. It was seen that many students still found difficulties in understanding the meaning of some words that they needed to consult them to the teachers and friends. The next was the non-linguistic category elaborated as follows: (a) mostly students disturb their friends during the teaching and learning process in the class, so it can disturb other friends and class during the learning process; (b) students talk a lot or ignore the learning process in the class; (c) students bullied their friends; and (d) limited time was available. The solutions in solving the problems show that the teachers used four approaches to solve the problems: teachers maximized student’s centered, motivated deeply and sustainably, provided new vocabulary and extra time via online. It was obvious that the students have positive responses toward the strategies. It is suggested that English teachers should always find new ideas, strategies, or techniques in teaching learning so that students are interested to take part actively in the learning process.
