This study is aimed at finding out the use of point-counterpoint strategy to improve students’ writing skill on discussion text at the second-grade students of Madrasah Aliyah Negeri (MAN) 5 Bireuen. This research used a quantitative method in nature. The subjects of this research were 42 students who were taken from two classes in the tenth grade (XI MIPA 1 and MIPA 2). Class XI MIPA 1 was as an experimental class, and Class XI MIPA 2 was as a control class. The researcher selected two classes because the students had relatively the same ability. The instruments used to collect the data were test; pretest, posttest, and questionnaire. The writing test was used for pretest and post-test. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statically to find the mean scores of the two classes. The result showed that the mean score of the pretest in the experimental class was 63.61, and the mean score of the posttest score in the experimental class was 77. In the meantime, the mean score of the pretest in the control class was 63.80, and the mean score of the posttest in the control class was 74.47. The experimental class means the score was higher than the control class. The score of the t-value was 1.71, while t-table on = 5% with df 40 was 1.68. so that, the hypothesis of this research was accepted. In addition, the result from the questionnaire showed that the students’ responses to the questionnaire concerning their perception toward the use of the Point counterpoint strategy in writing discussion text processes were positive.
