Title : Students’ Perception toward English Subject and Their Learning Outcome (A Survey Study at Senior High School of Jangka Buya and Bandar Dua)
Keywords: Student, Perception, English Subject
This survey qualitative research is aimed at finding out students' perception toward the English subject and provides an overview of the students learning outcome at senior high schools in Jangka Buya and Bandar Dua, Pidie Jaya. The subjects of this study were 75 students of four senior high schools. The instruments used in this research are questionnaire, interview guide and documentation. Students perception is catagorized into 3 namely education, economy, social interaction. and also 1 group of negative question model to support other 3 categories. Based on the result of the questionnaire, the students' perception toward English of SMAN 1 Jangka Buya and SMA Negeri 1 Bandar Dua is dominant in the category of education. This dominant perception is because of students' strong background on education. Generally, the students of SMAN 1 Jangka Buya come from dayah (Islamic school). They believe that learning English can improve opportunity to spread Islamic teaching through writing or da’wah (preaching). For SMAN 1 Bandar Dua students, who mostly come from high-educated families, they believe that by English skill, they can continue education abroad. In contrast, MAN 3 Pidie Jaya and SMA Negeri 2 Bandar Dua contribute the higest score in category of economy. The students' perceptions are more dominated by the economy category because mostly the students of MAN 3 Pidie Jaya and SMA Negeri 2 Bandar Dua come from business families; they have the perception that good English skill can improve career and jobs in the future. However, from those four schools, the education category (89.13%) is still more dominant than the economy category (81.93%). This means that the percentage of students who have a good perception in the education category is high. Additionally, researcher also find good result in student learning outcome, from 75 students, there are only 2 students failed to pass minimum competency criteria. It clarifies that majority of students have good learning outcome in English lesson. Based on the data above, the researcher concluded that the students' perceptions toward English subject in senior high schools of Jangka Buya and Bandar Dua are high. This is in line with the background of the students as the main factor in determining the type of perception. So that, the students perception and students’ background must be hardly noticed by teacher in planning a good teaching and learning process.
