Genre Based Approach focuses on increasing students’s awareness of different ways of organizing information in writing. This approach is believed as one of the appropriate approaches in teaching writing skill with purpose. Thus, this study is intended to elaborate some theories and research finding on the use of Genre based Approach in teaching writing skill. The objective of this study is to discuss some given theories or research finding on the implementation of Genre Based Approach for teaching writing skill. The discussion of this study is focused on junior high school students. This study found that Genre Based Approach is effective to be used in teaching writing because it helps students to write their text based on the purpose. The method used in this study was library research. The data were taken from books, articles, and other reading sources. Readings obtained from these various sources are processed and described in a descriptive way. Based on the research findings and experts’ statements, it is said that Genre Based Approach is effective to improve students’ writing skill. This study is expected to be useful for English teachers and readers.
