Title : An Analysis on English Students’ Self-Esteem in Speaking English at
English Department Students of Syiah Kuala University

This research was intended to investigate the English students’ self-esteem in
speaking English at Syiah Kuala University especially form Department of
English Education. The type of method used in this research is qualitative study.
The self-esteem questionnaire and interview were given to the students to find
about their self-esteem in speaking. Fifty English students of academic year 2013-
2016 were selected randomly for questionnaire subject and also ten students chose
as an interview subject. The questionnaire used consisted of 10 items which were
modified from Rosenberg’s self-esteem scale (1995) and Mills (2009). The
findings of interview was used to support or to get more valid data about students
sel-esteem. To obtain the score of students’ self esteem, the data were analyzed
based on Miles and Huberman (1994). After finding the result, the researcher
described the questionnaire’s results in charts while the interview’s results are
described in form of narration. This study concluded that most of the students
have a normal self-esteem with only some students faced speaking difficulties
such as lack of vocabulary, feeling unconfident, grammar problem and such other
problems.
