Title : An Analysis on Code Switching of Indonesian and English in
Travel YouTubers
Keywords: Code Switching, Indonesian YouTubers, YouTube
This study aimed at investigating the types of codeswitching and the
functions of code switching used by Indonesian YouTubers in their YouTube travel-
content videos. This descriptive qualitative study was conducted by collecting the
data from Indonesian YouTubers’ travel-content videos by watching and transcribing
them. The results of the study showed that there were four types of code switching
used by Indonesian YouTubers which are inter-sentensial switching (10.92%), intra-
sentensial switching(58.76%), tag switching (28.81%), and establishing continuity
with the previous speaker (1.51%). Intra-sententialswitching was the type of code
switching that was most widely used by the participants because it was easier to be
used in daily conversation. Meanwhile, there are six functions of code switching, and
the researcher found quotation (0%), addressee specification (7.39%), interjection
(75.37%), reiteration (6.40%), message qualification (7.39%), and personalization vs.
objectification (3.45%). Interjection was the function of code switching that was
most widely used by the participants since it helped the participants show their
expression clearly using interjections in English tag. In conclusion, the researcher
considered that the intra-sentential switching was easier to be used by Indonesian
YouTubers since it occurred only in a brief phrase within a sentence for their daily
conversation, while interjection function helped the participants to show their
expression clearly to attract the attention of the listeners by using interjection in
English tag. The researcher hoped that this research can be an idea for further
researchers who want to undertake a study related to the use of code switching in
such media platforms as instagram, twitter, etc.</note>
