Adsorben karbon aktif telah berhasil dipreparasi dari tempurung kelapa sawit dan tempurung kelapa. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mempreparasi material adsorben yang dapat mengurangi kadar zat racun (chemical oxygen demand (COD) dan amonia) dalam limbah cair pabrik industri minyak kelapa sawit yang dilepaskan ke lingkungan. Aktivasi karbon dilakukan secara fisika yaitu pemanasan pada suhu 300 oC dan secara kimia menggunakan asam sulfat 2,5 M dengan pH 1. Kedua adsorben tersebut dikarakterisasi menggunakan SEM-EDS dan FT-IR. Adsorpsi amonia tertinggi didapatkan pada menit ke-45 menit dan pH 3 untuk karbon aktif dari tempurung kelapa dan tempurung kelapa sawit. Isoterm adsorpsi yang diperoleh dari kedua adsorben tersebut mengikuti model isoterm langmuir (R2= 0,989 untuk tempurung kelapa dan R2= 0,938 untuk tempurung kelapa sawit). Limbah setelah  diadsorpsi oleh karbon aktif tempurung kelapa sawit menunjukkan nilai COD yang terendah yaitu 440 mg/L.&#13;

Activated carbon adsorbents had been succesfully prepared from palm kernel shell and coconut shell. This research aimed to prepare the adsorbent materials with an ability to reduce the hazardous substances (chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia) in the palm oil industrial wastewater released to the environment. The carbon activation was made physically involving a heating process at 300 oC and chemically using sulfuric acid (pH=1). Both adsorbent materials were characterized with SEM-EDS and FT-IR. The highest adsorption of ammonia was obtained at 45th minute and pH 3 for both coconut shell and palm kernel shell activated carbon. The adsorption isotherm performed by both adsorbents followed the Langmuir isotherm model (R2=0.989 and R2=0.938 for the activated carbon from coconut shell and palm kernel shell, respectively). The wastewater treated with the activated carbon from palm kernel shell gave the lowest COD concentration (440 mg/L).&#13;
