The purposes of this study are to know the strategies which are used by English teachers and the way of the English teachers implemen the particular strategies in teaching reading comprehension at SMPN 3 Sabang.The subjects of this study are two English teachers at SMPN 3 Sabang who teach in the class VII, VIII and IX. Descriptive qualitative method is used to describe the strategies applied by English teachers at SMPN 3 Sabang in teaching reading comprehension. The data of this study were obtained by using interview and observation check list. They are analyzed by using a descriptive explanation. The results show that the teachers at SMPN 3 Sabang used various strategies in teaching reading comprehension, such as using individual learning, cooperative learning, using media (games, pictures, series pictures) and grammar translation method. The teachers modify the strategies in teaching depending on the materials or genres of text.The implementation of the strategy is adapted by the teachers with the materials, the indicator, the purpose of learning based on the syllabus and curriculum. They choise the most appropriate strategies which can help the students comprehend the text well. The teacher’ reason in using the strategies because the students get difficulties in comprehending the text, especially the aspects in reading such as main idea, inferring, detail information, inference and reference. The use of appropriate strategies to reach the purposes of learning as planned in the lesson plan.

Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk mengetahui strategi yang digunakan oleh guru bahasa Inggris dan cara mereka menerapkan strategi tersebut dalam mengajar pemahaman membaca di SMPN 3 Sabang. Subyek penelitian ini adalah dua orang guru bahasa Inggris di SMPN 3 Sabang yang mengajar di kelas VII, VIII dan IX. Metode deskriptif kualitatif digunakan untuk menggambarkan strategi yang diterapkan oleh guru bahasa Inggris di SMPN 3 Sabang dalam mengajarkan pemahaman bacaan. Data penelitian ini diperoleh dengan menggunakan metode wawancara dan observasi. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa guru-guru di SMPN 3 Sabang menggunakan berbagai strategi dalam mengajar membaca, seperti menggunakan pembelajaran individual, pembelajaran kooperatif, menggunakan media (permainan, gambar, gambar berseri) dan grammar translation method. Para guru memodifikasi strategi dalam mengajar berdasarkan pada bahan atau jenis teks. Penerapan strategi mengajar disesuaikan dengan materi, indikator, tujuan pembelajaran berdasarkan pada silabus dan kurikulum. Mereka memilih strategi yang paling tepat yang dapat membantu siswa memahami teks dengan baik. Adapun alasan guru menggunakan strategi dalam mengajarkan siswa memahami bacaan karena siswa mendapatkan kesulitan dalam memahami teks, terutama aspek-aspek dalam membaca seperti main idea, inferring, detail information, inference dan reference. Penggunaan strategi-strategi yang tepat untuk meraih tujuan pembelajaran sebagaimana direncanakan dala lesson plan.
