Title : The Obstacles Faced by English Students of Syiah Kuala University in Doing Microteaching (A Qualitative Study at English Education Department of Syiah Kuala University)

Keywords: Microteaching, Obstacles, Student Teachers.

This study was aimed at investigating the obstacles faced by English Education students of UniversitasSyiah Kuala in doing microteaching. It also tried to find out the causes why they faced those obstacles in doing microteaching. A descriptive qualitative study was undertaken by observing and interviewing students in order to attain the needed data in this study. The results of the study from observation showed that there were six obstacles faced English student teachers in doing microteaching from the opening to the closing section, namely ‘conveying succinct learning objectives’, ‘using spoken language fluently’, ‘using written language obviously’, ‘assessing student competency’, ‘asking several questions before closing the lesson’ and ‘conducting what has been learnt’. Furthermore, the results of the study from interview showed that there were four obstacles faced English student teachers in doing microteaching, namely ‘designing lesson plan’, ‘classroom management’, ‘lack of confidence to teach’, ‘feeling nervousness to teach’. The most frequent obstacles faced by students were designing lesson plan and lack of confidence to teach. It reveals that no experience of teaching and lack of practice were the main causes most students faced these problems in doing microteaching. In conclusion, lecturers and student teachers at English Education of UniversitasSyiah Kuala still need to overcome a number of the obstacles to improve students’ teaching performance.
