Teaching and learning English at Malahayati Merchant Marine College is different from other regular institutions. It is because of time allocation provided for teaching Maritime English is excessively, along with the additional time for practicing the General English in order to increase the students’ performance in maritime field, still the students could not pass KKM set at 70. However in teaching and learning process, it was consider as problem or hinder the teacher to achieve the effective and efficient in teaching learning process. The objective of this research was to reveal the obstacles faced by the English teachers in teaching reading of Maritime English and how they overcome the problems. This study employed a qualitative design. The subject of this study were two English teachers who taught third semester students of Malahayati Merchant Marine College, and the object of the study was the obstacles they found while conducting the teaching and learning process. The data were collected through direct observation and interview. The data were analysed by using qualitative design. The data analysis was done through classification, reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study showed that the teachers encounter some obstacles in teaching reading of maritime English: first, the different level of students’ capability in class; second, the students’ unreadiness in teaching and learning process; third, the students’ low motivation in reading of maritime English; fourth, the facility and infrastructures in class. Then the study also to find out some actions took by the English teachers to overcome the obstacles as it was revealed in the discussion of this study. Regarding to the result of this study, it is suggested to all of the staff of the institution to work together and fully support the teaching and learning of Maritime English as we realized the importance of English for seafarers’ career in the international shipping industry.
