This study focused on analyzing the use of code switching by teachers in bilingual classes in terms of types and reasons. The objective of this study is to measure the frequency of code switching occurrences and the reasons of using them. The subjects of this study were 2 English teachers at Bunga Matahari International School, Banda Aceh. They teach Grade 1 and Grade 4. Each teacher was observed and recorded for 2 meetings, so that there were 4 meetings altogether. Then they were also interviewed to gather the more specific data. The data collection was done through classroom observation and interviews. The result from observation shows that teacher grade 1 did intra-sentential code-switching 13 times (33.3%), inter-sentential code-switching 9 times (46.7%), and tag-switching 2 times (20%). Meanwhile, teacher grade 4 did intra-sentential code-switching 10 times (54%), inter-sentential code-switching 14 times (37.5%), and tag- switching 6 times (8.5%). With regard to reasons, grade 1 teacher used more code-switching for reiteration and grade 4 teacher used more code-switching for explaining discourse content. In conclusion, there are differences in the use of code switch used by grade 1 and grade 4 teacher because of different age level can determine different application of code switching in EFL classrooms.
