Title : High and Low Achievers’ Dominant Learning Style Preferences in Learning English (A Mixed Method Study at MAN 1 Banda Aceh)

This study aims at finding high and low achievers’ dominant learning style preferences and the teachers’ understanding about students’ learning style preferences in learning English at MAN 1 Banda Aceh. In this study, the survey used the combination of quantitative and qualitative method. In the quantitative method, the questionnaire was used to explore students’ learning style preferences. For the qualitative method, an interview was used to get specific information about teachers’ opinions of students’ learning style preferences in learning English. In this study, the category of learning style used was Willing (1988) which consists of communicative, concrete, authority-oriented and analytical learning styles. The results of questionnaire showed that high achievers’ dominant learning style was the communicative one with the mean value of 3.12 and a standard deviation of 0.65. Meanwhile, low achievers also favoured communicative learning style with the mean value of 3.11 and a standard deviation of 0.63. From the interview, it was found that the teachers were aware and understood well about students’ learning style preferences in learning English. In conclusion, by understanding the characteristics in absorbing the information, the students can develop the skills in various ways to make them easier, faster and more successful in language learning.
