Keywords: Figurative Language, Situational Communication, Conversation Analysis (CA)
The purpose of this study was to find out the context of figurative language and its implication on situational communication found in the movie. This study used the framework provided by Keraf (2009) to understand the contexts of the use of figurative language in this movie and its implication on situational communication. The data which are the utterances containing figurative language from the movie were analyzed by using conversation analysis (CA). The qualitative description was used in the study because this method is suitable for analyzing the content of the figurative language used in the movie. The study identified ten types of figurative languages in 54 utterances in the movie which are simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification, assonance, rhetoric, repetition, sarcasm, cynicism, and irony. The implication of figurative language on situational communication is successfully delivered in every utterance where the character used figurative language because they share the same social cues. The character understood each other seeing that they share the same socio-geographic origin, socio-economic status, occupation, and friendship.
