Metacognitive awareness of reading strategies is a capability which the reader know to monitor and evaluate their comprehension before, during, and after reading. The purpose of this research is survey the awareness towards metacognitive reading strategies of the fifth semester English Department students in Universitas Syiah Kuala (Unsyiah), Banda Aceh. The focus is to measure their reading strategy awareness in reading EFL academic texts. In this study, data were collected using a questionnaire called Survey of Reading Strategies by Mokhtari and Sheorey (2002). It consists of three subscales namely Global Reading Strategies, Problem-Solving Strategies, and Support Reading Strategies. The survey finding and data analysis revealed that the overall average score of the students metacognitive awareness is 3.4, indicating a medium level. The frequency of each item in the questionnaire was also calculated from data to find out which strategies were most used and least used. Obtaining, 71,7% of high used percentage, item #3 was the most used item by the respondents. Item #5 and #21 obtained the highest number of low used percentage, making it the least used item by the respondents. This result shows that the respondents’ preference was towards using problem-solving strategies.
