Title	: Learning Strategies Used by the Students of Science Class in Learning English (A Case Study at Islamic Boarding School of Darul Ikhsan Aceh Besar).

Keywords: Learning Strategies, English Language Learning, Introvert Students, and Extrovert Students

Learning strategies are steps taken by learners to enhance their learning. An active use of language learning strategies helps learners in control of their own learning by developing language skills, increasing confidence and motivation in learning process. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to investigate the dominant language learning strategies used by science students, the introvert and extrovert students’ learning strategies use, and the students’ difficulties in learning English. This study was conducted on the basic of mix method procedure. The subject of this study was 56 eleventh grade students from senior high boarding school of Darul Ikhsan. The questionnaire distributed was developed by Rubin and Thompson (1994) as the instrument to solve the first research question. All of the participants were asked to respond on a five-point Likert scale. Interview consists of the items about learning strategies used in each skill learning along with the difficulties faced by students in each skill. It was used for answering the second and the third research problems which was addressed to eight students both introvert and extrovert. The questionnaire result was analyzed by looking at the highest frequency of students in learning strategies choice and the interview was analyzed by transcribing the recorded data. Then, three processes were employed; namely data collection and reduction, data display, and verification and summarizing. Finally, the writer interpreted the data results to provide explanations of the phenomena studied in the field. The result revealed that the science students used cognitive strategies, metacognitive strategies, affective strategies, compensation strategies, and social strategies in learning listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Both introvert and extrovert students employ the same learning strategies in certain skills, such as using cognitive strategy in learning four skills. The result denoted that the students faced difficulties in each skill. They emphasized some problems on complicated vocabulary use, difficult grammar use, having no ideas, and pronunciation in reading, listening, and writing. In short, the students used dominantly cognitive learning strategies which are the most preferences becoming the highest frequency and percentage in learning strategies choice of four skills. Based on the result of this study, it is suggested that the students should be trained to use learning strategies properly. English teachers should consider the learners’ strategies by asking their intentions and use the appropriate teaching method.
