<note>This study was conducted at SMP Negeri 13 Banda Aceh. The purpose was to find out whether the implementation of direct method applied by the teacher in teaching listening was based on the procedures suggested by Richards (1999: 9) and to figure out the students’ responses toward the implementation of the method. Both descriptive qualitative and descriptive quantitative were used in this study and the subjects were an English teacher and her 29 third grade students. Moreover, the instruments that were used in this study were observation sheet, interview guide and questionnaire item. Based on this research, it was found that two of the eight procedures of the direct method were not applied during the listening class. Students answered and were asked not in complete sentences. They were also not asked to practice new vocabulary in oral or written form. The students responded positively toward this method in the teaching learning process. Additionally, this method can motivate students in learning English, since the teacher used English without translating into the students’ native language.</note>
