Title : A study of Teacher’s Questioning Behavior and Their Effects on &#13;
Students’ Participation in Speaking English in The Classroom&#13;

As questions are commonly taken up in the process of teaching and learning English,&#13;
the teachers should enhance their questioning skill to engage students? participation,&#13;
particularly their participation in speaking English. This study aimed at describing &#13;
the teacher?s questioning behaviors, particularly the types of questions and their &#13;
effects on students? participation in speaking English. The object of this study was an&#13;
English teacher and students Grade XII IPA&#13;
3&#13;
 in MA Ulumul Quran Langsa. The&#13;
design of this study was descriptive qualitative research. To obtain the data the writer&#13;
used observation, document collection, interview and questionnaire. The result of&#13;
this study revealed that teacher asked more referential question (90 times) than&#13;
display question (60 times) in two meetings. In addition, the teacher mixed both&#13;
these types of questions in the same time. Furthermore, the writer found that 57.14%&#13;
(12 students) have participated actively in speaking English and 42.85% (9 students)&#13;
participated in English moderately. In addition, the data from questionnaire revealed&#13;
that 31.06% (7 students) had positive perception (strongly agree) toward the&#13;
teacher?s question, 34.4% (7 students) had average positive perception (agree)&#13;
toward the teacher?s question, 28.37% (6 students) disagree and 6.52% (1 student)&#13;
who was strongly disagree toward the teacher?s question. &#13;
