Title : An Experimental Study on the Application of Information Gap Technique in Promoting Speaking Ability

Keywords: information gap, speaking ability.

This study is aimed at finding out how information gap technique improves the students’ speaking ability as well as how the technique promotes the students’ English speaking ability. To obtain the data for this study, the researcher conducted a quantitative experimental research by using the one group pre-test post-test design at second year students of MTsS Al-Muslimun, Lhoksukon, Aceh Utara. There are four classes for the second year namely VIIIA, VIIIB, VIIIC and VIIID. The VIIIA with 30 students was chosen as a sample randomly by using lottery. The instrument used for both pretest and posttest was in dialogue test related to asking and giving opinion expression. There were four times meeting in this study. The result of the tests from the experimental group shows that the students’ ability in speaking activity gradually improves after the use of information gap technique. The mean score of the two tests increase from lower to higher; (7.16 to 14.66). Referring to the t-table at level significance 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 29, the result was higher than that t-table. The t- score is 17.44; meanwhile the t-table is 2.045. The percentage of students in using English increases from 36.67% to 80%. Therefore, the alternative hypothesis that stating the use of information gap can improve students’ speaking ability is accepted.
