Title    :   Investigating of  Taboo Language and Euphemism in Pidie Dialect&#13;
Key words: Taboo language, Taboo word and Euphemism. &#13;
Taboo words exist in all language and society.  The aim of this study is to identify taboo &#13;
words and euphemistic expressions used in Pidie  Jaya society. It also describes the types of &#13;
taboo words and euphemistic expressions which are used in the society. A qualitative&#13;
research was used as the method in this study and the data were collected by interviewing &#13;
eight Pidie Jaya people. The research shows that the taboo language in Pidie Jaya society &#13;
divided into two; (1) Taboo language based on the domain of speech, and (2) Taboo language &#13;
based on psychological motivation. Taboo language based on the domain of speech; (a) taboo &#13;
language related to  names of wild animals, (b) taboo language related to sacred animal, (c) &#13;
taboo language related to name of God, (d) taboo language related to holy Qur’an, (e) taboo &#13;
language related to name of parents, (f) taboo language related names of family member, &#13;
relative, and older people, (g) taboo language related the deceased people, (h) taboo language &#13;
related to shameful or frightening diseases, (i)taboo language related to hunting, (j) taboo &#13;
language related to selling, (k) taboo word related to ghost or evil sp irit, (l) taboo language &#13;
forbidden to mention at night, (m) taboo language saying people like animal, (n) taboo &#13;
language related to the characteristic of animal used to describe human, (o) taboo language &#13;
related to sexual activity, (p) taboo language relat ed to sensitive parts of body, (q) taboo &#13;
language related to certain body function, (r) taboo language related to female sexual organ. &#13;
Reasons for people using taboo language can be categorized based on psychological &#13;
motivation; taboo of fear, the taboo of  delicacy, the taboo of propriety, taboo because of a &#13;
religious order. In addition, there is six Euphemism used by Pidie J aya society;metaphor, &#13;
rhyming,  circumlocution,  omission, hyperbole,  and  understatement.</note>
