Title : The Use of Three Minute Pause Strategy to Improve
Students’ Reading Comprehension in Recount Text. (An
Experimental Research at SMAN 8 Banda Aceh)
Key words: Reading Comprehension, Three Minute Pause Strategy, Recount Text
One of the difficulties in learning English for senior high school students’ is reading
comprehension. To overcome these problems and to improve the students’ reading
comprehension, teachers can apply a creative strategy such as Three Minute Pause
Strategy. This study was to find out whether the use of Three Minute Pause Strategy
can improve students’ reading comprehension and whether there were significant
improvements in main idea, detail information and vocabulary after the strategy was
implemented. The sample of this one-group Pre-test Post-test study design was a
class in the first grade of SMAN 8 Banda Aceh. The test was a reading text in the
form of recount consisting of 20 multiple choice questions which covered main idea,
detail information, and vocabulary. The result of data analysis showed that the
strategy improved students’ reading comprehension in recount text (P = 0.039), with
P = 0.000 for detail information and P = 0.033 for vocabulary, with the level of
significant at 0.05; however, the main idea did not improve (P = 0.346). Based on the
results, it can be concluded that this strategy can be used to teach students reading
comprehension, and it works for all reading skills except main idea. Therefore, it is
suggested the teacher use Three Minute Pause Strategy in teaching reading
comprehension.</note>
