Key words: Short Story, and Reading Comprehension.

The objectives of this study were to find out whether there was any significant in
teaching reading comprehension between the students who are taught by using
short stories and those who are taught by using individual activity technique and to
know the students’ responses to the use of short stories in teaching reading
comprehension. This research was a quasi experimental study. The populations of
this study were one class was selected randomly as the sample consisting of 48
English students of Tarbiyah of Muhammadiyah University of Aceh. The
experimental class was treated consisting of 25 students by using short stories and
the control class was treated consisting of 23 students by using individual activity
technique. The quantitative data are obtained from the result of pre-test and posttest

score of the students’ reading comprehension and the qualitative data are
obtained from the questionnaire distributed at the end of meeting to know the
students’ responses toward the implementation of the use of short stories in
teaching reading comprehension. The data were computed and processed into
futher inferential statistics, the normality and the homogeneity of the data were
examined. The results of the normality and homogeneity test showed that the data
were normal (6,23) and homogeneous (1,64) As a result, the score of the post-test
of the experimental group is higher than that of the control group (80:65) by which
the gained score for t-test was 8 while the value for t-table was 1.684 at the level of
significance 0.05. It means that t-score was higher than t-table (8 > 1.684). It can
be concluded that the students who were taught by using short stories had a better
achievement in teaching reading comprehension than those who taught by using
individual activity technique. In brief, the use of short stories in teaching reading
comprehension enables to develop the quality of students’ reading comprehension
and gives good responses and the result of questionnaire showed that 84% of the
students responded strongly agree, 14% responded agree, 1% responded disagree
and 1% responded strongly disagree. Most students liked and agreed with teaching
reading comprehension through short stories.
