Title : Improving Students’ Vocabulary through Spelling Bee Game (An Experimental Study at Seventh Grade Students of SMPN 4 Banda Aceh)

Vocabulary is still as a difficult component for students to be mastered for their ability in mastering English language and the teacher seldom used specific strategy in teaching vocabulary. This research was aimed at finding out whether the use of Spelling Bee game can improve students’ vocabulary at SMP Negeri 4 Banda Aceh with focus on students’ vocabulary related to nouns. The sample of this research was the seventh grade students in the class of VII-2. The research design of this study was one group pretest-posttest design. To obtain the data, the researcher used a vocabulary test items on pretest and posttest. The result of data collection in this research shows that average posttest score is higher (88.76) than the pretest score (62.52), so the difference scores both of the test is 26.24. Moreover, the analysis of t-test showed that tscore > ttable or 10.826 > 1.71 at the level of significance 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 24. Based on these results, it can be concluded that Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected, which suggests that Spelling Bee game can improve students’ vocabulary. Therefore, Spelling Bee game is recommended as a good strategy in teaching vocabulary.
