Speaking is one of the skills that has become an important part of students’ daily &#13;
life. This study is descriptive qualitative research.This study was intended to&#13;
describe the teaching of speaking at SMA Negeri 1 Bireuen. It focused on&#13;
describing the teachers’ ways and techniques in teaching speaking and the&#13;
challenges in the teaching learning process. The subject of this study was the&#13;
teachers of the 10&#13;
th&#13;
 grade classes of SMA Negeri 1 Bireuen. The instruments used&#13;
to collect the data were observation and interview. The findings of this study show&#13;
that the teachers used many ways and techniques in teaching speaking in the&#13;
classroom. This is found in the way they construct lesson plan,  prepare the&#13;
materials as to teaching, showing good personal characteristics, providing&#13;
effective teacher-student interaction and making compelete assessments towards&#13;
students work. The teachers conducted activities that made the students active in&#13;
the teaching learning process. The teachers used the methods such as&#13;
Communicative Language Teaching and Cooperative Learning including giving a&#13;
talk, group work, assigning tasks, reviewing the lesson, taking control of a&#13;
conversation, pair work, and group work. Besides, the findings show that there are&#13;
some challenges that the teachers encountered in the teaching of speaking – i.e.&#13;
students’ lack of vocabulary, pronunciation problems, nothing to say, lack of&#13;
motivation and use of  mother tongue. Thus, the teachers do their best to&#13;
overcome these challenges along the process of their teaching in the classroom.  &#13;
