Title : An Analysis of Teaching and learning Strategies Used by
Students to Develop their Speaking Skill ( A Descriptive
Quantitative and Qualitative Study at Gampong Inggreh Aceh or
GIA )
Keyword: Teaching and Learning, Speaking
The aim of this research is to find out the implementation of good teaching and learning
strategies to improve students’ speaking skill at Gampong Inggreh Aceh . The objectives
of this study are (1) to investigate the teaching and learning strategies used by tutors to
improve students’ speaking skill at Gampong Inggreh Ac eh, (2) to investigate students’
respond toward the strategies used by tutors in the process of teaching and learning
speaking at Gampong Inggreh Aceh. This research applied the principle of action
research from 20 participants of students and tutors at GIA. The data collected were
qualitative and quantitative in nature. The qualitative data were o btained by doing
observation, and interviewing students and the teacher. Meanwhile, the quantitative data
were obtained using a questionnaire from Johnson and Cristenson (2000). The result of
this research showed that that there are 4 teaching principle that used in GIA that can
help students to improve their speaking ability; Techniques that cover variety of learner
needs. Essentially motivating techniques, the use of authentic language in meaningful
contexts and opportunities to initiate oral communication. A further analysis found that
four strategy types attract students to learn English and makes them feel comfortable.
These findings imply that strategies-based instruction, covering the four most influential
strategies, needs to be integrated explicitly in the speaking class to help learners, to
improve and cope with problems in learning speaking skill.</note>
