Title : An Experimental Research On The Application of Substitution Drill In Improving Students’ Pronunciation at SMPN 16 Banda Aceh




Teaching pronunciation is one of the most complicated but significant features for language learning. Substitution drill bear great benefits in pronunciation teaching and learning. This research uses experimental research design. It focuses on the students’ pronunciation perfomance on expressing the idea on simple short monolog in form of descriptive text specifically on describing person. This research took place in SMP Negeri 16 Banda Aceh, which consisted of 25 students that chosen randomly from three classrooms. The data were collected by using tests as the instrument, which are divided to pretest and posttest. The scores then were tabulated statistically by using t-test. The result of hypothesis testing of this study showed that students’ pronunciation performance is significantly improved ((19,7 t-count > 1,71 t-table). The research also improved students’ ability in speaking the target language. In conclusion, the study has demonstrated that the treatment activities have developed the students’ pronunciation and students’ interest and ability to speak and to expose the target language.
