Abstract Name : Irma Sofyani Student No : 1006102050026 Study Program : English Education Title : The Function of Code Switching in Serambi Indonesia Newspaper Keywords: Code Switching, Function, Newspaper This research was conducted to find out the use of code switching functions that were used by the authors in daily newspaper of Serambi Indonesia. The aim of this research is to see the occurences of ten code switching functions which were proposed by Malik (1994). It focused on explaining the occurrences of code switching function in the newspaper. The data were collected by gathering directly from the source that is the Serambi Indonesia newspaper. This research applied qualitative experimental research method. The subjects of this research were code switching in opinion 12 months from year of 2015 that focused on politic articles chosen through purposive sampling technique. The instrument that used in this research was document analysis. The data were analyzed by using steps formula as suggested by Miles and Huberman (1994) namely data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The result of this research showed that most of functions of code switching appeared in the articles namely there were seven functions: the lack of facility, to emphasize a point, lack of register, to address a different audience, mood of the speaker, habitual experience, pragmatic reasons and to show identity with a group that became the most occurences function used by the authors. And the functions which were no appeared on opini namely semantic significance.
