Title : An Analysis of Students’ Ability in Translating English Grammatical Equivalence into Bahasa Indonesia

Key words : Equivalence, Grammatical, Translation

Equivalence of grammatical has five main categories: they are number, gender, person, tense, and voice. Grammatical equivalence in translating the two languages is very important to achieve contextual meaning. The objective of this study is to investigate the problems of grammatical equivalence which includes number, gender, person, tense, and voice categories in students’ work sheet. This research was designed as a qualitative research. Documentation method is used to collect data. The findings of the analysis are as follows. First, with regard to number, singular or plural forms in English as the source language (SL) can be translated into either singular or plural forms in Bahasa Indonesia as the target language (TL). Second, with regard to gender, Masculine in SL can be translated into general in TL and Feminine in SL can be translated directly to TL. Third, all SL pronouns can be translated into their respective counterparts in TL. Fourth, SL tenses can be translated lexically or understood from the context. Fifth, the active voice in SL can be translated into either TL active or passive voice, while the passive voice are translated into TL passive only. It tends to make problems such as found in the data. It is suggested that translators should have capability in grammatical categories in English and Bahasa Indonesia so that they can find the contextual equivalence and the translation is natural and acceptable by the TL readers.
