(A Qualitative Study at SMA Negeri 1 Unggul Baitussalam,
Great Aceh)

Keywords: Indonesian, English, teaching, teacher

Indonesian is believed to be one of language that influences the success of teaching and learning English in Indonesia. Therefore, to achieve the goals of teaching, teachers can apply Indonesian and mix Indonesian and English in the classroom. The researcher investigated the use of Indonesian in teaching English at SMA Negeri 1 Unggul Baitussalam. The participants of this research were two English teachers in SMA Negeri 1 Unggul Baitussalam. It is a qualitative study. Interview and observation were used to collect the data. For data analysis, the data were analyzed to identify the aims of teachers’ used Indonesian based on Cameron categories (2001). The result of this research shows that explaining new language – translation become the most dominant category applied by two teachers (50%) followed by checking understanding (20.6% and 19.4%), feedback (17.6% and 16.7%), and giving instructions (11.8% and 13.5%). It can be concluded that the teachers of SMAN 1 Unggul Baitussalam more often used Indonesian when explaining or translating new words than checking understanding, feedback, and giving instructions. Thus, using first language is greatly affecting students to understand the materials when the learning is going on in a foreign language class.
