Title : Teacher’s Perception on Teaching Grammar for Junior High School Students (A Descriptive Qualitative Study in SMPN 3 Banda Aceh)

Keyword: Teacher, Perception, Teaching Grammar
This study was conducted due to different perception on teaching grammar among the English teachers at SMPN 3 Banda Aceh. The purpose of this study was to find out teachers’ perception on teaching grammar. This research applied descriptive qualitative. The subjects of this study were all of English teachers. The data were analyzed by using formula as suggested by Sudijono (2010).The data were collected by conducting interview and distributing questionnaire by using Likert Scale. This research focused on teachers’ perception on teaching grammar. The result of this research showed that teachers assumed that they need to teach grammar to students because the knowledge and insights of grammar help their students in mastering English language. For an effective grammar teaching, teachers chose practice, implicit and deductive approach as their style in teaching grammar to their students. This research can hopefully be a reference for those who have the same perception on teaching grammar. The teachers have awareness to view grammar as one aspect of language that should be taught implicitly as suggested by curriculum. In short, teachers should teach grammar and motivate students to learn grammar.
